Car Transfer Education
Independent driving can be key to participating in community activities including visiting family, going to school, and having a job. For individuals with spinal cord injury, transferring into and out of a car can present unique challenges including the need to support the body across the gap between the wheelchair and the car seat. Also, the vehicle seat can be higher than the wheelchair seat, particularly for those transferring into higher profile vehicles, such as vans, SUVs, and trucks. Most people with spinal injury who drive independently will need to load their wheelchair into the vehicle. These videos demonstrate a variety of transfer techniques into several different types of vehicles. Take a look at the strategies used by these experienced individuals.
